A Dupe for Benefit They're Real Mascara!

BeautyMeganComment

Greatest news ever! I'm pretty sure nearly everyone has heard of or tried Benefit They're Real Mascara. It was all the rage when it came out a couple of years ago. Since it's debut, Benefit has added an eyeliner to the line as well.

But the real star, as many of you know, is the mascara. I'll admit, I drank the kool-aid with the Benefit mascara and it tasted delicious! It's always hard to splurge on mascara when there are so many good drugstore options available. So, while I do think the Benefit mascara lives up to it's claims, I can't say I will be repurchasing it now that I've found an amazing drugstore dupe! Dun dun dun! This wondrous discovery is Maybelline's Volum'Express The Rocket Mascara

This mascara works AMAZINGLY on my lashes! I don't know if it's just a good formula or if it just gels with my lash type (average fullness & length, natural curl to them) but wow, I think I like this formula BETTER than They're Real!

The brush is definitely a little bit different but the effects are the same. I will say, having a ball on the end of the wand would really come in handy for getting the inner corner lashes, but that's the only advantage to They're Real. The Rocket delivers instant lift, separation (are we talking about cleavage?) and volume to the max!

Have you guys tried this mascara? Let me know if you love it too and if you have any other amazing drugstore dupes!

Sephora Haul - VIB Sale

Beauty, HaulMeganComment

Hey guys! Just wanted to share what I got at the Sephora VIB sale..a bittersweet occasion for sure! Thankfully, I did "need" a few of the things I purchased... you know how it seems like you run out of EVERYTHING all at once sometimes? Well, that happened to me. So here's what I got, let me know if you were enticed to shop, and of course what goodies you got!

Ole Henriksen The Whole Truth value set. Loving this so far, so citrusy and delicious! It's supposed to brighten up the complexion and make you glow!

Finally, the REAL beauty blender  is mine! I was so excited to get this! It truly lives up to the hype. I love this little sponge! This set came with the Beauty Blender Solid cleanser, which is also amazing. It cleans so well with just a tiny bit of soap! I also spent some of my reward points (I've only been hoarding them for over a year). I got TWO of the Bobbi Brown BB creams because they happened to be in my shade (fair), plus I needed a new BB cream. These are .5 oz so I pretty much got a full size product for FREE! Hollaaaa

Damn you Sephora check out line, you got me! Like the travel size hair product addict that I am, I couldn't resist picking up this Living Proof Full shampoo. So far, so good! It doesn't have sulfates in it but it still cleans my hair really well and leaves it pretty voluminous!   Oh hey,  Black Honey ! The Almost Lipstick shade is back, and in a few new product varieties. I love it just as much as I loved the one I deboed from my mom back in the day ;)

Laura Mercier has really enchanted me lately. I'd been hearing about the new Smooth Finish Flawless Fluid foundation lately and just so happened I was running out of my foundation so I had to try it! Then, I got on a crazy kick trying to find the perfect MLBB shade, which also happened to be in the Laura Mercier line. I went with the Laura Mercier Lip Colour Sheer in the color, Healthy Lips. I LOVE it! The smell is amazing and it's a perfect blend of color/sheer/sheen.   And hey, why not try another LM product, I thought. I finally picked up the Caviar Stick Eye Colour  in the shade Amethyst (always sold out). SO GLAD I DID. I haven't worn anything else on my lids since!

Clearly, I've got an unhealthy amount of nail polish considering this is only the Julep portion of my collection. For my fellow nail polish-aholics, Julep is a fabulous, yet dangerous, subscription service to use to get your fix.

Previously, the Julep subscription service worked like this: every month you get a Julep box filled with polish, tools, and/or beauty items depending on the style profile that you've chosen. Each month you're given the opportunity to review the items that are contained in your style profile's box. At that time, you can opt to choose a different style profile and/or add on additional polishes and products at a discount.

Recently, Julep made some additions to their subscription options--now you can hand pick the items that go into your box each month. Check here to learn more about the Julep subscription service and rewards program.

Do you already use Julep or a similar subscription service? If you've been on the fence you should look into it! I believe you can get your first box free right now! Bonus--if you aren't thrilled with the colors/products for the month, you can always skip it!

I hope you all have a fab weekend, talk to you soon!

DIY Honey Scalp Exfoliator

Beauty, DIY, try this, hair, ReviewMegan2 Comments

I'll admit, sometimes I go entirely too long without washing my hair. Sounds gross, whatever, I have dry hair people! Plus, who has time to wash and dry their hair all the time? Not this girl.

Unfortunately, the buildup from products paired with my sensitive scalp leave some questionable results by the end of my washing cycle. So, sometimes I really need to exfoliate my scalp but I need something that is gentle.

I've seen some products on the market that are made specifically to exfoliate the scalp but I'm feeling cheap so I researched my own homemade recipes to try. See below for the easy instructions on how to make your very own!

3 Simple Ingredients:

Honey

Olive Oil

Sugar

yummy honey! This soothes, smoothes and nourishes the scalp and hair

Mix it up!

Mix it up!

How To:

Mix 1 tbsp honey, 1.5 tbsp olive oil and 3 tbsp sugar together in a small bowl. Apply the mixture directly to your scalp and gently massage in a circular motion.

This mixture is a little dry so it's difficult to spread around. I found the easiest application technique is to take about a half tablespoon of the mixture and apply in sections to the scalp. Once applied, shampoo until all remnants of the mixture are dissolved. (I rinsed and added more shampoo several times). Then, condition hair as usual.

Results:

I can 100% recommend this exfoliator! It has worked amazingly well on my hair/scalp. Not only did this remove all build up and smooth out my scalp, but it made my hair so soft and shiny! It felt so clean and refreshed! Plus, you probably already have all of these ingredients in your kitchen right now. Double Bonus: Try this on your body as well for some smooth and sexy limbs!

Have you tried a scalp exfoliator? Am I the only weirdo not washing their hair several times per week? Meh, oh well! I hope you all had a fabulous long weekend!

Homemade Mani Monday!

Beauty, DIY, Mani MondayMeganComment

I love doing my nails. I know a lot of people prefer to have them done, and I enjoy that too, but for me it's much more fun to do them myself! I'm kind of obsessed with nail polish. If you ask any of my normal friends, they can tell you I have way too many bottles of this stuff. Hence my obsession with Julep, a nail polish subscription service. (I'll give you more information on that below)

These two polishes were in my last Julep box, Margaret on the left and Princess Grace on the right.

I love playing around with nail polish. This gave me a good idea for a future DIY!

Initially I was leaning toward just using the blue on it's own. I thought the orange would be better suited on my toes. But, after asking Twitterverse and Instaglobe what to do, I was quickly convinced that I needed to incorporate both colors! What a great idea/color combo! And thank you to everyone that responded! This look has a very sporty feel to me but fun and happy at the same time. Just what I need for a Monday!

No pro tools used or needed here, just the brush that comes with the polish, some q-tips and a bobby pin!

JULEP Info:

Juelp is awesome if you are a nail polish fiend like me. It's like Birchbox and other beauty boxes except that it's nail polish and you can choose what you get in your box! Each month you have the option to skip the box all together or adjust your style profile so that you can get colors that you want. Julep polish sells for about $14 at Sephora but with the subscription you get over half off! Plus, you get points and freebies!

I could go on forever about Julep but I'll spare those that are not interested. If you'd like to see more info, I can do a review in the future. Just let me know in the comments below if you'd like to see a post on it! If you are interested in signing up for Julep, you can use the link below:

Sign up for Julep!

UPDATE! I have a COUPON CODE for a FREE Julep Maven box. Get your first box free with code, "FREEMAVEN"!! Enjoy and let me know how you like your new polish!

So what do you think? What colors are you sporting this week? Happy Monday Everyone!

(botched)DIY: Rosewater Facial Spray

DIY, Tips, try this, BeautyMegan3 Comments

I have always wanted to try a facial spray, but the rosewater variety has always been particularly intriguing. The idea of it seems so luxurious yet natural and home grown all at the same time. "Perfect!" I thought.

You only need a few ingredients to make your own rosewater--Distilled water, Roses and Aloe Vera Gel (not required)

You only need a few ingredients to make your own rosewater--Distilled water, Roses and Aloe Vera Gel (not required)

While I've come across many facial sprays--Jurlique , Fresh, Boscia, Josie Maran, the idea of paying $25-40+ for a few ounces of ...water...to spray on my face just seemed a little ridiculous. When I realized I could make my own, I couldn't wait to whip up a batch!

Now, I say this is a BOTCHED DIY because, while the video tutorial I found does a great job at explaining the necessary steps, I found the process to be a lot more involved than I had anticipated. For instance, the 30 minute time frame...more like 4 hours. So, in a sense, this DIY was a major fail for me but only because I wasn't properly prepared.

But fear not! I have the tips that you need in order to guarantee you don't screw up your rosewater DIY! If you'd like to try making your own, head over and watch the video tutorial and then come back for my tips/add-ons!

  • You need a LARGE pot, not a tiny one like in the video. I think I sized up my pot about 3 times.
IMG_1349.jpg
  • You need a Large bowl

Because I didn't anticipate using such a large pot, I only bought a small bowl to sit on top the rose petals. This caused MAJOR problems. For one, the boiling water overtook the bowl and the rose water bowl capsized :( Which meant I had to start all over and dump the water back into the pot.

Boil your rose petals to create concentrated rosewater

  • Make sure you are using a level burner on the stove

I noticed that the rosewater bowl inside the pot kept making it's way over to the side of the pot and wouldn't stay in the middle. Eventually I realized this was because the burner was uneven! Also a reason why it took FOREVER for the rosewater condensation to accumulate in my bowl.

  • Be prepared for the stench-- "roses really smell like boo-hoo-hoo"
  • The color in your rose petals may not fade completely so carefully monitor your pot. If the water completely evaporates, you will end up with burned rose petals that smell even more boo boo.
  • Lastly, you will probably end up with 2.5-4 oz of rosewater so make sure you have a spray bottle that is big enough unless you want to waste your precious petals.
End result..looks a little sketch, I'll admit it. But it seems to be working well! :)

So my botched DIY wasn't a complete waste of time. I still produced a bottle and a half of my very own Vday rosewater tonic. So far, it's been making my skin feel nice and refreshed. I use it right after washing my face and right before my moisturizer.

Have you ever tried a facial spray or rosewater spray? Do you think it's worth making your own? What is your all-time favorite skincare item

Happy Hump Day!
